I started playing mesmer recently, after years of monks, sins, paragon and GWAMM on necro main. It is different but fun and I hated it until I hit level 20,even though I'm probably above average in profession knowledge (particularly PvE).

The only purpose of this char is DoA speedclears though :P

Working on mesmer for my 4th GWAMM. Amazing profession! Neutralizes HM enemies and makes HM looks like easy shit....

Largely, yes.
Although my Nec does this too and he's better at it. Although the gap has closed quite significantly since the last update.

I like playing with Mesmers, in my experience played by mature players, often wanting to try something different than the usual. It can be a tough class to play (much easier facerolling DPS combos), but their skill set is very interesting. They always get a slot in my team.

I've played a bit myself, not really as much as my monk (nothing has really), but had fun with Powerblock, Migraine, Ineptitude, echo air-ele, E-Surge, Backfire, Empathy, Diversion, arcane conundrum, Hex breaker...

Frustrating if you miss an interrupt, but rewarding when it hits the spot. Satisfying seeing AI being rendered useless while the rest of the team bulldoze through them.

In PvP, mesmers are a P.I.T.A. Tells its own story.

Panic totally makes HM easy. I just sweeped through Slaver's Exile HM with a friend, 6 heroes and my mesmer. Seeing dozens of mobs with "!!" above their heads, unable to do anything is pure awesome.
The mesmer does quite a lot of damage in PvE, since all of it is armor ignoring. There's the Keystone Nuker, Illusion has Ineptitude, Clumsiness and Wandering Eye, Domination has Mistrust, Energy Surge, Enchanter's Conundrum, Chaos Storm etc.. They're the Hard Mode nukers, whereas Elementalists have their spells' damage output reduced because of the monsters' high armor.
However, it's a class that works on the "Know thy enemy" principle. You don't take Ineptitude in an area filled with casters, or Panic where the groups are small and scattered, or cast Mistrust on an enemy that has no spells whatsoever. It requires a bit of planning, but if you get it right, the results are more than satisfying.

P.S. If you decide on creating a mesmer, make it female and buy her Vabbian Armor dyed black Personally, I think it's Guild Wars' most elegant armor!

The fun in a mesmer in PvE is that they're just so cool.

Enemy casting Meteor Shower? I just use psychic instability and knock him+everybody else nearby down on the ground for 4 seconds. Sit back and watch your team kill them.

In PvP, the fun is in picking apart your opponents until they're furious at you, at which point they start getting sloppy and you win anyway.

I like my mesm, even though LL right now. I put ranger as 2ndary because that way I can have a pet to help with damage and seems to work great for me.

Of all the professions, its the one I have enjoyed playing the most for all the reasons stated above. The Mesmers are so versatile with the multiple ways to play them: you can interrupt, shut-down, e-denial (though in HM this isn't strongly advised) or degen enemies to death. All from the mid-line,

What about Extend Conditions or Epidemic? Those combine well with the condition-spreading skills.

I don't believe he is into playing mesmers, but I never really saw rangers as conditions spreaders. They do have conditions, but they don't come close to other professions.

Perhaps not, but that's how they were advertised. It was true for a while at least, and in PvP degen makes a difference and bleeding/poison come most easily from a Ranger so it's still true in that aspect. That said, in PvE, you're better off running a Fevered Dreams build if you want to use conditions.

I have been playing the game for almost 6 years now, and I have to say, I've only ever played as a Mes primary. I would say for PvE, choosing Ele as a secondary is a great choice. All the great Ele spells have long casting times and high energy costs, but with Fast Casting, you rarely see an activation bar, and no other profession does energy management better than a Mesmer. The Mes spells Backfire and Empathy work really well against PvE foes, as they dont stop spamming. So they usually end up committing suicide. And its always nice to be able to stop those annoying bosses from using the skills that devastate. And in PvP, everyone knows how unmatched Mesmers are in shutting down key players.
As for which campaign, I would say it doesnt matter. The hardest thing your going to find is getting a team to take you. Players ares slowing learning the real use of Mesmers in PvE, so finding a team that understands what you are trying to do can bean issue.
Gender doesnt really matter, as they both look the most sophisticated and regal. They have the most elegant hair and armor.
Good Luck!!!!!

This looks like a message from the past, like 2006.

Mesmers have no problem getting into groups. And the others do understand what you'll be doing: casting Panic

In HM that's a bad idea unless you're running Fevered Dreams and going /E for Ash Blast. Ele skills do very bad damage in HM (compared to the likes of Rits, Mesmers, and buffed melee anyways) and Mesmer's own skills are ridiculously strong compared to anything the average Ele can put out.

Soul Reaping, Leadership, Mysticism with a Zealous Scythe, and Ether Renewal. Mesmers have pretty good e-management, but they aren't the best.

Complete shutdown is generally better than watching enemies kill themselves through autoattack, which is why so many Mesmers run Panic or some other variant.

What?

Mesmers are used just about everywhere. Everyone accepts they're one of the best professions in the game now, and that their ability to deal armor ignoring damage and shutdown is more or less unparalleled in general situations (especially in PuGs, where you're less likely to find a coordinated group at all).

There's a reason most groups and even some speed clears (while not representative of general PvE, they're still a sign of what has some strength) want a Panic mesmer.
